Pills and Pill BottleThe pain market remains a very lucrative area for the development of pharmaceuticals because of a high patient potential in several different pain indications and growing unmet need. Acute moderate to sever pain is CL's initial focus with CL-108. Postoperative pain represents the mainstay of this market. Some estimate that as many as 75% of patients experience pain after surgery. Current treatment patterns utilize opioid analgesics in moderate to severe cases of postoperative pain. Because 30-40% of patients taking opioids experience nausea and vomiting, there is a substantial opportunity for development of CL-108 and the future portfolio of opioids with minimal or no nausea or vomiting. In 2005 the global opiate market was $5.3 billion. In the US alone in 2006, over 41.2 million patients experienced post-operative pain. More specifically: in 2006, sales of hydrocodone (the most prescribed opioid analgesic) were $1.2 billion in the US and Europe (80% of global market) and growing at 6.5%/yr. CL-108 is positioned to be an innovative solution for managing post-operative pain by alleviating the nausea and vomiting commonly associated with opioid usage. Designed to be a dual-release single tablet formulation, the fast release and absorption of a low-dose anti-emetic, just prior to release of the opioid, will allow the patient to experience rapid pain relief without the additional discomfort of nausea or vomiting.

Charleston Laboratories intends to enter into both discovery and commercialization alliances with partners motivated to introduce novel pain therapies. To contact CL about Business Development opportunities please send email to BD@CharlestonLabs.com.
